Case: The case is the box that holds all the computer components. The Case comes with a Power Supply, the power supply provides the necessary power to all the components within the computer case

Speakers: These are the speakers for your computer. This is where the sound comes out of when you play music, etc.

MB: Motherboard. The motherboard is the "traffic lights" of the computer. It connects all the parts and makes sure the traffic (all the bits of the computer) is flowing freely. The motherboards we have hear all contain on board sound, video and network. This means that if you do not need to have separate components, such as a video card. However, if you wish to play high graphic games, or do computer intensive work, it may be a good idea to get a video card as well! (see Video)

Windows: This is the OPERATING SYSTEM for your computer. The operating system is what tells the computer all the things that it can and can't do. Windows XP Home or Professional are the main operating systems used and they include programs such as Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, Movie Maker and Word Pad. The general rule of thumb of which one to choose is Windows Home for computers at home, and Professional for business computers. Do NOT confuse the OPERATING SYSTEM disk with MICROSOFT OFFICE (see SW). All computers NEED an operating system to work..

CPU: Central Processing Unit (Processor): The processor is the "brains" of the computer. It processes all the information your computer does. The faster the processor, the faster the computer processes the information. The standard home computer uses a Pentium IV 3.0Ghz Processor. There are two types of Processor, AMD & INTEL. If you choose an AMD processor, you must have a AMD motherboard (we offer the KM51PV or the K8M800-754). If you choose an INTEL processor you must have an INTEL motherboard (we offer the K8M800-754 or P4M800-775). There is a lot of argument about which one is better, the real answer is for the average home user, they are about the same, although we use the INTEL at our offices.

CPU

Software are programs that are loaded on your computer to do various tasks. Microsoft Office is a common software program that people buy, it includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint and Access.

RAM: Random Access Memory: The RAM is the part of the computer that "remembers" what you are doing while you have your computer on. This enables you to work in multiple windows, and multitask (do a number of things at once). 512KB's of RAM is our recommended minimum for a system, and should be enough for everything a home user would want to do, however if you intend to do computer intensive work, it may be worthwhile getting 2 sticks which is the equivalent to 1Gig of RAM. KB stands for Kilobytes. GIG stands for Gigabytes.

Antivirus: Antivirus programs are used to prevent viruses coming to your system when surfing the internet, downloading files or receiving emails. We recommend using AVG Virus Scan, by Grisoft.

Drive (1&2) - This is your Hard Drive. Your hard drive is where all the information is kept. An 80 gigabyte hard drive is usually enough for most home users, but if you intend to save a lot of information to your computer, it may be worth having a second hard drive.

Printer: These are printers - they print any information or photos from your computer.

DVD/CD: There are five types:

DVDRW - DVD Burner - these burn DVD's, CD's and play DVD's & CD's

DVDR - DVD Player - these only PLAY DVD's & CD's

DVDR/CDRW - DVD/CD Combo - these PLAY DVD's & CD's, but BURN CD's only

CDRW - CD Burner - these burn CD's and play CD's but do NOT burn OR play DVD's

CDR - CD Player - these only PLAY CD's, the do NOT burn DVD's or CD's OR play DVD's - these are no longer available to buy.

VIDEO: Video Card: A video card is only necessary if you intend to use your computer for intensive work, or high graphic gaming. This is because all our motherboards have on board sound.

UPS: Uninterruptible Power Supply: These keep power to your computer if the power (electricity) goes out in your house. This enables you to shut down your computer and save any documents. UPS also have surge protectors. We recommend that all computers should have a UPS attached.

Modem: The modem is the device that connects your computer to the internet. If you have a "dial up" account you will need an internal or external modem. If you have ADSL or CABLE, you may have been given a modem from your Internet Service Provider. If you wish to have wireless internet at home it is recommended you get the DLINK DSLG-604T.

DVD/CD: There are five types:

DVDRW - DVD Burner - these burn DVD's, CD's and play DVD's & CD's

DVDR - DVD Player - these only PLAY DVD's & CD's

Keyboard: This is the keyboard for your computer. If you choose the Microsoft Keyboard and Optical Mouse Pack, leave the mouse section blank.

Network: These are if you have more than one computer and want to join them together. If you do not understand how networks work, it may be worth contacting us for advice before choosing what you need.

Mouse: This is the mouse for your computer. If you have chosen the Microsoft Keyboard and Optical Mouse Pack in Keyboard, leave this item blank.

Monitor: This is the monitor for your computer. Manufactures no longer make CRT monitors (the big ones), so all monitors here are FLAT SCREEN LCD monitors (which are the thin monitors).

Flash Disk: These are little hard drives that can save your information. They plug into USB ports so they can be taken from computer to computer. They are about the size of a cigarette lighter.
